How to wash bamboo underwear

The rules that matter

• Machine wash at 30°C with similar colors, on a normal or gentle cycle.
• Liquid detergent, normal dose. No bleach, no stain removers on the fabric.
• No fabric softener. It coats the fibers and dulls exactly the properties you paid for.
• No tumble dryer, ever. Hang or lay flat; bamboo dries fast on its own.
• Do not iron the waistband; heat is what kills the elastic.

Why 30 degrees

Viscose fibers are at their weakest when hot and wet, and the 5% elastane that gives your boxers their recovery ages quickly above 40°C. A 30°C wash cleans underwear perfectly well with a modern detergent, and it is the difference between a waistband that snaps back for years and one that gives up in a season.

Washing, step by step

• Turn the boxers inside out; the side that touched skin washes first.
• Wash with similar colors. The darker colors can share one dark load; wash white separately.
• A mesh laundry bag is optional but keeps waistbands away from zips and hooks.
• Use a moderate spin. It will not damage the fabric, it just creases it less at lower speeds.

Drying and storage

Hang them on a line or lay them over a rack; bamboo viscose releases water quickly and is usually dry in a few hours. Keep them off radiators and out of harsh direct sun, both of which stress the elastane. Store them folded, not stretched over anything, and rotate the pack so all pairs age evenly. When a waistband stops recovering or the fabric thins at the seams, that pair has done its service; with this routine, expect that day to be far away.

The five mistakes that wear them out early

• The tumble dryer. Responsible for more dead underwear than everything else combined.
• Hot washes. 60°C feels hygienic but mostly ages elastic; 30°C with proper detergent cleans fine.
• Fabric softener. Coats the fibers, blocks the breathability you bought bamboo for.
• Radiator drying. Slow heat is still heat.
• Chlorine bleach. Damages cellulose fibers outright.
